Dr. Rachel Allbaugh is educating the next generation of veterinarians by bringing her renowned expertise to a global audience.
Dr. Rachel Allbaugh set her sights on being a veterinarian at an early age.
She was inspired to specialize in veterinary ophthalmology when her beloved childhood pet, a cat named Mitty, was successfully treated for vision-compromising symptoms at Iowa State.
Dr. Allbaugh, the Lora and Russ Talbot Endowed Professor of Veterinary Medicine, is now paying it forward as an internationally recognized leader in the field.
Visionary Vet
Dr. Allbaugh has devoted her career to the academic side of veterinary ophthalmology. She’s treated animals as small as a hamster and as big as a draft horse.
Widely published and a sought-after speaker, she provides practical information that veterinarians can immediately use to assist in the diagnosis and management of common ocular conditions.
Part of her work includes mentoring junior faculty and ophthalmology residents as they train to be the next generation of animal health specialists. The team is currently investigating the use of ultraviolet-C light to treat corneal infections.
Accessible Education
Dr. Allbaugh is also expanding her lessons beyond publications and speaking engagements to reach a wider audience. Working with a colleague, Dr. Allbaugh has launched a veterinary ophthalmology video series on YouTube.
Designed for a broad audience of veterinarians and students, video topics range from how to put drops in a pet’s eyes, animal eyelid surgery, and techniques for eye removal. Some of the videos have nearly 5,000 views, helping to make their teachings easily accessible to aspiring veterinarians around the world.
